Modern foreign language - French
French
The National Curriculum states that teaching should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language. At Hartford Manor we shall be focussing on teaching French across KS2.
In teaching French at Hartford Manor, we aim to:
- foster an interest in learning another language;
- introduce children to another language in a way that is fun and enjoyable;
- stimulate and encourage children's curiosity about language;
- help children to develop their awareness of cultural differences in another country.
During Key Stage 2, children will be taught to:
- listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding;
- explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes;
- engage in conversations; express opinions and respond to those of others;
- develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases;
- appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language;
- broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary;
- write phrases and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly;
- describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing;
- understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied.
